Contempora­ry Ethnic Queen pageant finals on May 13

KUCHING: Eight finalists will vie for cash prizes and trophies in the Contempora­ry Ethnic Queen 2017 pageant at Eastern Mall in Siburan here on May 13.

The Queen will be taking home RM1,000 in cash on top of the crown, sash and trophy, according to event organising secretary Patricia Judin recently.

“Starting at 8pm, the beauty contest is one of the highlights of the two-week long Gawai Dayak Bazaar (GDB) 2017 event themed ‘Be Daring To Make A Difference’. The GDB 2017 event started on April 28 and ends on May 13,” Patricia said.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas officiated at the opening ceremony for GDB 2017 on May 1. A Miss World (Miss Talent) mini event was held as the launch gimmick during the opening ceremony.

The bazaar festival will end with a closing ceremony on May 13 with Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing expected to officiate at it. Assistant Minister for Transporta­tion Datuk DrJeripSus­il,AssistantM­inisterfor Youth and Sports Snowdan Lawan, Tamin assemblyma­n Christophe­r Gira Sambang, Padawan Municipal Council chairman Lo Khere Chiang and Kota Samarahan Municipal Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos have been invited to attend the closing ceremony.

The closing ceremony will be a grand affair, complete with a parade of performers in full traditiona­l attire, Patricia said, adding Masing will join the parade which will start with participan­ts assembling at 4pm. Two participan­ts will be selected as the King of Dashing and Queen of Enchanteur respective­ly.

On top of that, Dayak singers Sima, Linda Simai, and Tony Engkabi, among others, will entertain guests and visitors.

Another highlight of GDB 2017 will be the GDB Idol 2017 singing competitio­n final on May 11 with the champion receiving a cash prize of RM300 and a trophy.

Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak (GADS) who is organising GBD 2017 is collaborat­ing with several Dayak-based non- government­al organisati­ons ( NGOs) and government agencies here to hold similar bazaars in Saratok, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang in conjunctio­n with the Gawai Dayak celebratio­n that falls on June 1 and 2.
