KUANTAN: The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry is to amend several environmental laws to ensure sustainable development to achieve the 2050 National Transformation (TN50).

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said that among the laws regarded as obsolete and requiring amendment was the Environmental Quality Act 1974.

“Maybe, 2050 is still a long way off but we will also amend according to the current situation ... and among the other laws that will be amended are related to biodiversity, river reserves and water that also include the interests of the state government,” he said.

He spoke to reporters after a TN50 dialogue on Future Aspirations of the Environment of Our Country at the Gambang

The event was also attended by the deputy minister, Datuk Hamim Samuri, and Ministry secretary- general Datuk Seri Azizan Ahmad.

The event, organised by the ministry and attended by more than 300 students from various institutions of higher learning, was held to seek the aspirations of the public, especially young people, on environmental issues in order to ensure the success of TN50.

Dr Wan Junaidi said that through such dialogues, the government hoped to create a lineup of potential national leaders who were sensitive to the question of environmental conservation.

In this regard, the ministry would organise more of such dialogues if if there was demand from other universities, he added.

Wan Junaidi also said the ministry would ensure that the East Coast Railway Project did not have a negative impact on the natural eco-system of the country. — Bernama
