The Borneo Post helps students in Sebuyau improve English proficiency
SEBUYAU: Several schools in Sebuyau have benefitted from the Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme, using The Borneo Post as a learning tool to improve English proficiency among students.
According to Sebuyau assemblyman Datuk Julaihi Narawi, many students in the area have improved in their command of the English language since the NIE programme was introduced by him last year.
Under the programme, Julaihi subscribes The Borneo Post for all the 19 primary schools and a secondary school in Sebuyau constituency under his minor rural project (MRP) grant.
“I have found out and was also informed that the NIE programme has benefited the school children in the constituency, to improve their level of English proficiency... so such programme will continue this year,” Julaihi, who is Assistant Minister of Coastal Roads, said yesterday at a Teacher’s Day celebration for Sebangan Zone, at SK Haji Bujang, Sebangan here.
Present were Simunjan district education officer Samsul Alam Mohd Shamsudin and Sebangan zone Headmasters Council chairman Mohd Ramlan Bohari.
Earlier, Julaihi was informed by Ramlan that schools in Sebangan zone were top among the schools in Simunjan in English language largely due to the NIE programme.
Julaihi urged teachers, parents and the school children to make full use of the facility provided to the schools to improve their command of English language and at the same time for the overall academic improvement of the schools.
“We must be very determined to work together (teachers and parents) for the sake of our children to become successful in education,” he pointed out.
Julaihi was also glad to note the academic and co-curriculum improvement of the schools in the rural areas, including in Sebuyau, despite their dilapidated conditions.
He gave all teachers serving in rural dilapidated schools a pat on the back for their commitment and dedication to carry out their tasks.
Meanwhile, Julaihi advised people living in coastal areas to prepare for the proposed construction of coastal road in order to benefit from the economic spin-off of the project.
“We must not just stand and stare, but must aggressively participate in the economic opportunities brought about by the development of the coastal road,” he stressed.
