SIBU: A jobless man is believed to have shot dead his elder brother after a quarrel broke out between them at their longhouse in Sebintik, about 26 miles from here, around noon yesterday.

The deceased, identified by police as Entili Ampass, aged 45, was killed while resting on the verandah after his 39-year- old brother allegedly fired at him from a distance of about 100 metres with a shotgun.

Sibu police chief ACP Saiful Bahri, who confirmed the incident, said police were investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

He also congratulated his CID team for solving the case with the swift arrest of the younger brother.

Prior to the tragedy, Entili had scolded and beat his 16-year- old daughter for spending the night out in town.

His younger brother tried to stop the beating, which led the siblings to quarrel with each other.

Following the quarrel, Entili went to sit on the verandah while the younger brother returned to his house and retrieved his shotgun, which he allegedly discharged once at Entili before riding his motorcycle into a jungle near the longhouse to discard the weapon.

Following his arrest, the suspect led police into the jungle to recover the shotgun.

Although it was claimed that the younger brother had been drinking since Saturday, police have not confirmed whether or not he was drunk at the time of the incident.

The suspect is jobless and is staying with his parents while Entili lived at a separate unit with his wife and three children.
