MIRI: The rugged, hilly and swampy terrain of Telang Usan constituency can serve as a drive park for heavy duty (4WD) vehicles sport, thus boosting tourism in the state.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said groups of 4x4 clubs in the state had approached him to express their interests to have an off road park in the constituency so that more tourists including enthusiasts will come to enjoy the jungle scenery apart from enjoying the thrill of driving on rough roads.

“I am proposing a 4x4 park avenue in Telang Usan, thus creating another tourism sport in Sarawak involving off road challenges and expeditions,” Dennis said when flagging off the 2nd Northern Sarawak 2017 off road expedition at Emart

Present were Oiltown Adventures Club ( OAC) Miri chairman Mohd Suffri Hamdan, a political secretary to the chief minister Charles Balan Seling and Gagasan Anak Dayak Sarawak ( GADS) adviser Jetli Jelian.

Organised by OAC, the route of the expedition is from Miri passing by Long Lama and Long Bedian until Tenyok.

A total of 21 vehicles from United Kingdom, Brunei, Sabah, Limbang and Miri are taking part in the three- day expedition

Dennis said he was in favour of the proposal because Telang Usan has timber tracks and a scenic countryside suitable for off road driving and a camp avenue.

Besides promoting Telang Usan to the world of 4WD, he believed the park will bring economic spin- offs to the local community.

“We believe by working together with all relevant parties and promotion on social media we can make the proposal a reality and a success, he said.

Earlier in his speech, Dennis said even though the 4x4 event looked simple it required participants to take safety seriously.

He praised the club for drawing participants from outside the state and country.
