Govt commends BSN for service to rural community
KUALA LUMPUR: The government has commended Bank Simpanan Nasional ( BSN) for providing basic banking services to the rural community and those living in the interior areas.
Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Wira Othman Aziz said the scope and responsibility of BSN was in line with the government’s aspiration of wanting the delivery of qualitative services, something that is very subjective, but measured by effective strategies.
“BSN’s role in the development of the community in the banking segment is very vast. It is not just an agent to implement various government incentives, but also support initiatives to promote and offer facilities to the people,” he said in his speech at the BSN Bank Agents Awards Night here on Saturday.
Othman also said among the government schemes or assistance to the people through BSN are those such as Taxi Rental Ownership/ New Cars Rental, 1Malaysia School Bus Rental Ownership, Night Market Traders Financing and Youth Housing.
“Under the current financial landscape of the country, inclusive financial initiatives represent the main agenda to encourage access to financial services that are more inclusive as well. This initiative becomes more important when banking products and services become more complex in the future,” he added.
According to Othman, with the challenging economic climate, the country must take steps to move towards a high income economy.
“In this regard, the financial sector does not just play an important role, but also surpasses it from being just a motivator of growth to a key catalyst for the nation’s economy,” he added.
The introduction of the Registered Bank Agents service by Bank Negara Malaysia is based on the Financial Sector Plan 20112020. — Bernama
