Police arrest 7 over murder of man, obtain 6-day remand

KUCHING: Police have arrested seven suspects in connection with the murder of of man, who died following an assault early Monday at Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim here.

District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai confirmed that six of the suspects were picked up in different locations between 8.30pm on Monday and 11am yesterday, while the seventh was nabbed at Bandar Baru Semariang at 4.30pm yesterday.

“The suspects, aged between 22 and 39, comprise five males and two females,” said Abang Ahmad when contacted yesterday.

It is believed that the main suspect in the murder was among the seven caught by police, who are investigat­ing the incident under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

In the 2am incident on Monday, Shamsul Hipni, the 41-year- old deceased, had engaged in an argument with a group outside an entertainm­ent outlet.

Shamsul, from Bandar Baru Semariang, ended up being chased some 300 metres across the road by the group and allegedly attacked with sharp weapons.

Following the arrests, four of the suspects, who are married couples, were remanded yesterday for six days until next Monday to facilitate police investigat­ion.

They appeared before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi, who allowed the remand applicatio­n made by the police investigat­ing officer.

The remand applicatio­n for the remaining suspects is expected to be made today.
