Internship programmes provide job opportunities

MIRI: Weststar Aviation Services ( WAS) – as one of the leading oil and gas transportation service providers in South East Asia (SEA) – is providing job opportunities through internship programmes to locals where it operates.

WAS domestic operations general manager, vice-admiral (R) Datuk Jamil Osman said as of 2017, a total of 750 graduates of mid and high education have undertaken the internship programmes with WAS – the outstanding ones absorbed into working for it.

“Internship programmes are part of WAS’ strategies of investing in human resources, not only within the company but also with the community we operate in, especially in Miri,” he said during the handover of certificates to the fi rst batch of four interns at WAS base here recently.

Jamil noted that as part of WAS commitment towards providing equal job opportunities to locals, over 50 per cent of its employees in Miri are Sarawakians.

He pointed out that WAS recognised the need to strengthen human capital in Sarawak, hence has started on an initiative to elevate the socio- economy in Miri by creating new job opportunities, introducing new technologies and improving the skills and performance of local workers.

“This would enable Sarawak’s local talent to compete effectively on the global stage,” he said.

Over 50 professional Sarawakians are working as pilots, engineers, ground staff as well as senior management in the organisation and at its operations all over SEA.

On the certificate presentation to the four interns, Jamil said WAS was proud that their fi rst batch of interns completed their induction course yesterday.

The interns are Bryan Luhat, Fleacer Apoi Lawai Sigau, Jason Embam Jacob and Andrea Patira Charlie.

“During their attachment, they were given insight on the working culture of WAS and a chance to learn and explore some of the opportunities available in the industry, while building their skills and confidence,” Jamil said.

Also present at the event yesterday were WAS engineering general manager Ahmad Rashide Mustapah and its ground operation manager Rosli Sanni.
