Raising the profile of sports science in S’wak
KUCHING: The Sarawak Sports Corporation ( SSC) and Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS) are embarking on cutting edge psychophysiological approaches to further enhance the performance of Sarawak’s top athletes.
Dr Garry Kuan from Universiti Sains Malaysia ( USM) and Dr Chin Ngien Siong from the Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Tun Abdul Razak ( IPGKTAR) Samarahan have gone down to the ground to conduct biofeedback analysis, halo neuroscience system and mental skill training on elite tenpin bowlers and throwers ( hammer, discus and shot put) in Kuching, Sarikei and Sibu from May 7- 9.
They are among the sports science experts headed by Dr Balbir Singh Bhagwan Singh whose team is supported by the ISN Sarawak Satellite Centre’s sports psychologists and mental trainers.
SSC chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee, who is also MSNS director, said Sarawak sports need to move forward professionally and scientifically. He revealed that biofeedback and halo neuroscience are an efficient and powerful method of performance enhancement for Olympic and professional athletes to attain peak performance.
He added that full cooperation and support between the Sarawak Education Department, all state sports associations with SSC and MSNS are necessary to ensure these programmes can be carried out smoothly.
Among the Sarawak throwers who have u ndergone t he biofeedback analysis and mental skill training were Queenie Ting Kung Ni, Florence Wong Poh Yee, Johnny Ling Siew Hong, William Wong Tung Wei and Kong Ching Poh.
Sarikei-based renowned coach for throwers Thomas Ling Neng Thung said understanding the mind and peak performance is vital as this scientific approach had provided him with a clear understanding of his athletes’ minds to help them develop their emotional control during competition.
