Androgynous Li Yuchun’s dress sense turns heads at Cannes festival
CANNES: Androgynous singer Li Yuchun’s dress sense at the Cannes Film Festival has been attracting more than the usual attention.
Li, who has just been named Gucci’s brand ambassador in China, strutted the runway for a philanthropic event.
Li was once quite a controversial public figure in China for having a boyish face.
In recent years, a great number of luxury and fashion brands have started collaborating with her.
This year, Li has already appeared at public events wearing gowns by the likes of top brands Givenchy and Maison Margiela.
For fashion houses planning to make a killing at the massive China market, Cannes is one of the must-score platforms.
In 1993, actress Gong Li had dropped jaws by showing up in a classic outfit by an unidentified designer.
That was also the year director Chen Kaige had won the Palme d’Or (the festival’s highest honour) for Farewell My Concubine. Gong Li was the female lead. In 2005, award-winning actress Zhang Ziyi had wowed the crowd by flaunting an Armani outfit.
Her sexy outfit was worn for the appearance for Rob Marshall’s Memoirs of a Geisha.
Back in 2007, matinee favourite Maggie Cheung had likewise turned heads with a striking yellow and black gown by Givenchy.
She won the Best Actress Award for her role in the movie Clean, directed by French director Olivier Assayas, now her ex-husband.
