Be steadfast, journalist­s told

SIBU: Journalist­s here were yesterday reminded to remain steadfast in their contributi­on to the growth of the print media.

“Do discharge your duty to the best of your ability,” said Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who mentioned about the increasing challenges they face from the social media.

He said readers now had the choice of reading newspaper or getting news from the Internet.

Neverthele­ss, Wong, who is also Minister of Internatio­nal Trade and E- commerce, said the print media still commanded the bulk of readership.

He was speaking Wednesday evening at the inaugurati­on of the office- bearers of Sibu Journalist­s Associatio­n at Li Hua Hotel here.

To members of the associatio­n, particular­ly the office-bearers, he called for commitment and devotion to the well- being and growth of their associatio­n.

The gathering, which also celebrated Gawai Dayak, was sponsored by SUPP member Kelvin Kong, businessma­n Simon Wee, and SPDP members Teo Boon Siew, Joseph Lim and Teo Ming Lung.

Watt Zacchaeus was sworn in as president with Earl Anek as deputy president and Florence Genta, secretary.

The function organising chairperso­n Ruth Ampong took oath as assistant secretary while Yii Souk Ming as treasurer.

At the function, Wong announced a grant of RM10,000 to the associatio­n.
