Retreaded tyres: Vehicle owners told to be proactive

-

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Efforts by the authorities to tighten enforcement on the ban on the use of retreaded tyres without Sirim certification will not be effective if vehicle owners themselves are not proactive in the matter, said advisor to the Transport Ministry Tan Sri M Kayveas.

He said use of uncertified retreaded tyres by heavy vehicles like lorries, trailers and buses was on the increase lately because of the cost factor but stressed that this was an added road safety risk.

“It will be difficult to tackle this menace ( uncertified retreaded tyres) if vehicle owners themselves do not do their part,” he said.

Kayveas, who is also myPPP president, was speaking to Bernama handing over contribution to two NGOs and Cameron Highlands RELA totalling RM12,000 in Tanah Rata here yesterday.

Sirim certified retreaded tyres for heavy vehicles cost around RM1,000 while new ones above RM2,000 each. Uncertified retreads are popular because they cost around RM400 a piece.

On political matters, Kavyeas said the mass exodus out of newly- formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) showed it did not “cut any ice with the people”.

He said the party did not have any direction and its sole aim was to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former deputy prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin are individuals who are greedy for power and that was why they set up PPBM,” he said.

Dr Mahtathir is the chairman of PPBM while Muhyiddin its president.

This week alone more than 1,000 PPBM leaders and members in Perak quit the party. — Bernama
