‘Women play key role in encouraging critical thinking in children’

KUCHING: Women play a pivotal role in inculcating the value of critical thinking in the young ones, says Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

He said they could nurture families, especially the children whose future would depend much on upbringing and the right way of thinking.

“Fundamental values that guide the young ones towards leading a more successful life should begin from their families,” he said at the Kuching and Samarahan Divisions Chinese Women Association’s 69th anniversary dinner at Chung Hua Primary School No 3 hall here on Sunday.

Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawa assemblyman, said Chinese primary schools should continue taking in Bumiputera pupils to better promote Chinese culture.

“Chinese schools are places not just for learning but also for promoting better understanding among non- Chinese of the Chinese traditions and culture.”

He also called upon the Chinese community to uphold the tradition of fulfilling their filial obligations to and respecting the elderly members of society.

Meanwhile China deputy consulgeneral in Kuching, Zhang Yang said the Chinese government had made it its responsibility to take care of the elderly citizens given the reality of China approaching the status of an ageing nation.

He said the Chinese government had to come up with measures to tackle issues arising from its ageing population.

On top of that, Zhang said development policies in China must include plans for the ageing population and at the same time, its government is also providing welfare assistance to the old folk. He then lauded the women association on playing its part in promoting Chinese culture among the locals – Chinese and non- Chinese alike.

The dinner was also attended by Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman, Federation of Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions Chinese Associations deputy president Wong Tiong Hook and event organising chairperson Kapitan Mary Lee.
