1,000 take part in Gawai parade

SRI AMAN: The usually quiet atmosphere of Sri Aman town was broken yesterday as more than a thousand people participat­ed in a Gawai parade to ref lect the strength of unity within the Dayak community.

“The objective of this parade is to promote and safeguard the Dayak culture besides being thankful for this year’s harvest,” said the parade’s organising chairman Temenggong Samuel Lawen.

He also added that the parade this year involved the showcasing of a number of traditiona­l ethnic costumes from the Dayak community which have become iconic symbols of beauty and unity in Sarawak.

Also joining in the parade was Deputy Home Minister Datuk Masir Kujat, Assistant Minister of Community Well Being Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Snowdan Lawan and political secretary to the Chief Minister Dato Sri Doris Sophia Brodie.

At the same event, Masing also announced an allocation of RM50,000 to the associatio­n to fund its annual activities. His allocation was topped- up by Harden, who announced an allocation of RM25,000, followed by Masir ( RM10,000) and Snowdan ( RM7,000).
