SPDP Women Baram’s bowling friendly doubles as charity event
MARUDI: It was a show of solidarity and camaraderie during a friendly bowling tournament run by the women’s section of Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) for Baram parliamentary constituency at the Megalane Star Bowl in Miri recently.
The three- set game, which gathered 16 members from SPDP Women branches of Marudi, Telang Usan and Mulu, was held in celebration of Mother’s Day.
According to SPDP Women Marudi chairperson Councillor Theresa Gelang, the event also raised some funds – thanks to donations from the bowlers.
“Apart from promoting a healthy lifestyle, this friendly tournament is also aimed at raising funds to help Uki Ibau – a single mother from Rumah Morgan at Sungai Nyipa in Bakong – so that she could celebrate Hari Gawai Dayak this year,” she said.
It is learned that Uki is suffering from a number of illnesses including diabetes and hypertension. She has two children – one who is already married and not living with her; and her young son who is wheelchair- bound after he was involved in an accident.
Back on the bowling tournament, Theresa said it was part of the activities held this year under the purview of SPDP Women Baram.
SPDP Women Marudi, in collaboration with the Beluru District Office, hosted the districtlevel Women’s Day on Jan 6 this year, which gathered more than 400 local women.
After that, SPDP Women conducted a cooking class at Miri Community College on April 29, which was attended by 22 women.
“There are other activities still in the pipeline for this year and we will inform the members accordingly,” said Theresa.
