KUCHING: The Malaysian Infantry Division stationed here will tighten security checks at the Malaysian- Kalimantan border crossings, especially during this festive season.

First Infantry Division Commander Datuk Major General Stephen Mundaw when contacted yesterday said troops have been directed to be more alert as there will an upsurge of cross border activities during the festive season.

He said enforcement agencies have to be strict in enforcing immigration laws and regulations but at the same time add a “human touch” in carrying out their duties.

Mundaw conceded it is not easy to keep that balance and he was thankful for the good sense and close cooperation between army personnel from both sides of the border.

“There may be a lot of activities and happening at the border but the situation is under control. Border security agencies are doing a good job.

“We work very closely with our neighbour, particularly with the Indonesian infantry. We patrol the border together and stay at the same post. We have formed smart partnership at the border. On a personal basis I am in constant contact with my counterpart, the Panglima Daerah Militer 12,” he stressed.

Mundaw emphatised with his men who are on duty during the festivals and the officers who have “to be with the boys”.

Last Monday, Mundaw hosted a breaking of fast event with his men at Serikin Army Camp in Bau.

In his address, he urged them to discharge their duty well and urge them not to let their guard down during festive season.

He praised his men for foiling several smuggling attempts involving controlled items, foodstuff and stolen vehicles at illegal entry points along the border.

Before the breaking of fast, Mundaw personally took the opportunity to make spot checks at the entry point.

Among those present were Third Brigade commander Brigadier General Bustaman Mat Zin, Fourth Royal Armour Regiment Lt Col Mohd Nizam Masri and several Indonesian infantry officers.
