KUALA LUMPUR: For physically abusing her four-yearold daughter that the child required stitches on her forehead and suffered bruises all over her body, a young mother was fined RM8,000 or given six months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Magistrate Mahyudin Mohmad Som also ordered Nurul Nadzira Jamal, 26, to be placed on a good behaviour bond for two years under Section 31(2)(a) of the Child Act 2001, in one surety with a deposit of RM3,000 or three months’ jail in default.

Nurul Nadzira, who is jobless, failed to pay the fine and bond.

The accused pleaded guilty to causing injuries to her daughter at a rented room, Jalan Mahkota, Taman Maluri, here, between May 12 and 15, this year.

She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine not exceeding RM20,000, or both.

Earlier, the mother of two who was unrepresented, pleaded for a light sentence, saying her second child was only eight months old and was still being breastfed.

However, deputy public prosecutor Nur Farah Adilah Noordin asked for an appropriate sentence, taking into consideration the injuries suffered by the child.

In the same court, the accused’s boyfriend, Muhammad Asyraf Jalaludin, 26, pleaded not guilty to the same charge. The DPP offered him bail of RM10,000 in one surety but the court did not set any bail as Muhammad Asyraf had no bailor present in court.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant who is Nurul Nadzira’s ex-husband was visiting his daughter (the victim) on May 18 when the child told him that she had been pinched, slapped and bitten by her mother and the mother’s lover.

The victim also told her father that the stitches on her forehead were due to a fall on the floor when she was being hit while bathing. — Bernama
