KUCHING: Residents of f lats at Taman Sri Jaya, Mile 9 in Matang have complained about abandoned units, which they say are a health hazard.

According to f lat owner Ng Lik Tong, 54, residents have to put up with bad odours due to fungus and bacteria in the three abandoned flat units, which are said to also be inhabited by wild animals.

The hawker claimed to have complained to the Padawan Municipal Council ( MPP) about the matter early last year, but was referred to the Housing Development Corporation ( HDC).

“On our own initiative, we could seal the door of the abandoned houses to prevent the wild animals from inhabiting there but that cannot prevent the fungus and bacteria growth due to the moisture,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Stampin member of parliament Julian Tan said when he received Ng’s complaint early last year, he wrote a letter to HDC as well as filed a complaint through Talikhidmat.

“I also received a reply from HDC after a few days stating that the 3- 0107 unit was in the process of repossession.

: On the second issue on hygiene, HDC said they had already informed Daya Builders Sdn Bhd to do the cleaning. That was in February, 2016 but until now, nothing has been done by them.

“Early this year, I received a reply from HDC again stating that the unit has been sold off and they will ask the appropriate parties to do the cleaning,” said Tan.

However, Tan claimed nothing had changed when he visited the units two weeks ago.

“We would like to urge HDC not to delay in solving the problem. Even though they are low cost flats for the people, the condition must be well kept.

“It doesn’t mean that they can be left unattended just like that,” said Tan.

According to him, the lighting, piping and maintenance of the street lighting in and near the flats were not properly done.

“We can also see that this does not only happen in the f lats in Matang. There are many similar houses or flats under HDC, that are in similar dire conditions,” he claimed.
