KAPIT: The 34- door Rumah William Unchat at ulu Sungai Yong held its mangkong tiang ceremony yesterday.

Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi congratulated the longhouse folk for succeeding in constructing the longhouse by gotong-royong.

“This new longhouse has been built with a lot of assistance from the government from earthwork to building materials used to put this up.

“I’m impressed by the way they organised themselves when they built this longhouse by gotongroyong style,” he said when officiating at the event.

He pointed out that the longhouse, which is a 45-minute drive from Kapit, has 24-hour electricity supply thanks to the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) and clean water supply from a gravity feed system.

Nanta called on the longhouse folk to now focus on economic activities such as commercial agriculture, and ensuring their children get a good education.

“The people realised very well it’s always the government continuously improving the infrastructure and amenities development here. The opposition can only shout and talk about shortcomings and that’s all they do. They’ve not done anything good for the people. They’re just pointing out what they think is not right.

“The people know better the real situation and assistance given to them – who has been helping them. They have realised where there is real assistance and just mere lip service,” he said.

Among those present were Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat, and Tapah Ata – a political secretary to the Chief Minister.
