Chenggir gets a much needed sofa

-

KUCHING: Hope Place aid recipient Chenggir Blon, 80, shed tears of joy when handed a lightlyused sofa a day before Gawai.

According to Hope Place founder Kelvin Wan, Chenggir resides in a house built by Projek Perumahan Rakyat Miskin Tegar ( PPRT) together with her grandson Ricky, who is in secondary school.

Her husband passed away 20 years ago, and after his divorce, her son left Ricky in her care before leaving home.

“She received RM300 from the state Welfare Department. The sitting room is almost bare - no TV or sofa. Only a simple folding table and two plastic chairs,” Wan said.

When the sofa arrived at her doorstep, she was touched and told Wan this was the best gift for her Gawai celebration, and would be used to take afternoon naps in.

“It’s the most expensive thing in her house now,” Wan pointed out.
