BINTULU: The Muslim residents of Taman Sri Pelabuhan at Sungai Sepait here gathered at Surau Al- Hijrah for their first Friday prayers there since its official opening earlier this month.

I would like to thank and congratulate the committee members of Surau Al-Hijrah for their effort together with BPHB Islamic Welfare Committee in obtaining the approval from the Sarawak Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) for the surau to hold Friday prayers. The congregation was joined by Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd ( BPHB) group chief executive officer Dato Mohammad Medan Abdullah.

“I would like to thank and congratulate the committee members of Surau Al- Hijrah for their effort together with BPHB Islamic Welfare Committee in obtaining the approval from the Sarawak Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) for the surau to hold Friday prayer.

“Now, it is very convenient for the Muslims living in Taman Sri Pelabuhan to perform the weekly mass prayer. I was told that previously, they had to travel all the way to either Masjid Kampung Jepak or Masjid Assyakirin for their Friday prayers,” he said when met recently.

Mohammad Medan also hoped that with the new surau, there would be more Islamic-related activities such as religious talks run by the committee going forward.

“I was also told that an application to upgrade the surau’s status to a mosque would be made – I hope this could be realised in the very near future,” he said, assuring the committee that BPHB would provide its support from time to time.

“This is one of the company’s commitments in ensuring that its employees can enjoy adequate facilities in order for us to produce not only excellent workers, but also quality individuals who would reap the benefits in this material world and also in the ‘ Hereafter’.

“I hope the residents of Taman Sri Pelabuhan will use this facility properly and make this surau as a place to educate and produce quality Muslims.

“The surau committee members should also be more proactive and creative towards achieving this goal – the safety and cleanliness aspects must be emphasised,” Mohammad Medan said.

The majority of residents of Taman Sri Pelabuhan are BPHB personnel.

Surau Al-Hijrah was officially declared open by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg on May 5 this year.
