Catch up on George MacKay, Cannes 2017’s rising star actor
BOTH in their twenties, the two recipients of Cannes’ 2017 Chopard Trophy already have impressive resumés spanning film and TV; Anya Taylor- Joy and George MacKay will also costar in a haunted house thriller due later this year. Check out archive trailers for five MacKay performances and the upcoming horror tale “Marrowbone.”
By the time Anya Taylor- Joy breakthrough “The Witch” was debuting to a rapturous reception at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, MacKay had been laying the groundwork for more recent successes with a dozen feature film appearances of his own.
First glimpsed as the sidekick Curly in a 2003 adaptation of classic adventure story “Peter Pan” (youtu.be/WQu42a_ nhRE), MacKay was ten years later winning a Scottish Bafta for his performance in twice- Cannes nominated fishing town drama “For Those in Peril” (youtu.be/qXGc0IMd5z8,) a second Scottish-set film in a row after the critically acclaimed musical “Sunshine on Leith” a few months earlier.
In 2014 came biographical comedy drama “Pride” (youtu. be/vsFY0wHpR5o,) in which he appeared with Dominic West of 2017’s Palme d’Or winner “The Square,” while 2016 brought another Cannes favourite, family tale “Captain Fantastic” (youtu.be/gDF_P5J1zlU,) and wellreceived Stephen King episodic adaptation “11.22.63” (youtu.be/ NXUx__qQGew.) Next for MacKay is another project with fellow British actor Clive Owen, who led one of his early on-screen appearances, “Defiance,” in 2018’s Shakespearean spin- off “Ophelia,” which is currently fi lming.
Later this year, he’s also expected to be seen with Amandla Stenberg of “Everything, Everything” in Amma Asante’s wartime romantic drama “Where Hands Touch,” and with Martin Freeman of “The Office” ( UK edition,) “Sherlock” and “Fargo” in “Ghost Stories.”
In addition, there’ll be an opportunity to see both MacKay and Taylor- Joy in distinctly chilling circumstances.
