High possibility for two schools in Pantai Damai to be centralised — Dr Abd Rahman
KUCHING: There is a need to centralise two schools under the Pantai Damai state constituency, which have very low enrolments.
According to Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, SK Sungai Aur and SK Sibu Laut – each of which has between 20 and 30 pupils and around six teachers – could be combined with SK Telaga Air, which has sufficient facilities and more teachers.
“By combining these schools, the government can focus better in channelling funds and allocating quality facilities,” he spoke prior to the distribution of ‘Bubur Lambuk’ at Surau DarulMuttaqin in Kampung Sourabaya Hulu here yesterday.
Dr Abdul Rahman – also who is also Pantai Damai assemblyman – was commenting on the proposal by Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin on the ‘entralised school concept’ for schools with low enrolment of students in Sarawak.
“I supported the proposal by Dato Sri Manyin, as it will address the situation involving suburban schools, especially those with low enrolment rate and poor performance,” said Dr

However, he said the situation might be different in rural schools where the population is scattered; thus in- depth studies by the state and federal education authorities would be very much needed towards coming up with a solution.
“The population is very much scattered (in rural areas) and for them (students) to move to a new place, (this) may require further studies. I supported the proposal (by Manyin) so that government funding could be utilised to the maximum, in that the distribution of funds could be focused on the centralised schools,” said Dr Abdul Rahman.
Some 350 packs of Bubur Lambuk were distributed to the public at the event where later, Dr Abdul Rahman also presented Ramadan assistance to 20 individuals comprising single mothers and senior citizens.
