Police smash syndicate packing drugs worth RM1.63 mln in tea packets
GEORGE TOWN: Police have succeeded in busting a drug trafficking syndicate which placed syabu (methamphetamine) into Chinese tea packets following the arrest of six local men in Seberang Perai on Wednesday.
The drug syndicate which has been active since early this year was nabbed by Bukit Aman Special Tactics and Intelligence Narcotics Group ( Sting) in an operation at 5.45pm to 10.15pm on May 31.
Bukit Aman Narcotics CID principal assistant director SAC Zulkifli Ali said the six syndicate members aged between21and45wereapprehended in two separate operations based on police intelligence and monitoring.
According to him, police also seized 21 kilogrammes of drugs believed to be syabu hidden inside Chinese tea packets, 7,800 Eramin 5 pills and 18 grammes of ganja in the raids.
“Initial police investigations found the total seizure of drugs valued at RM1.63 million was believed for distribution in the local market and in Indonesia,” he told a media conference at Penang police contingent headquarters here yesterday.
He said police also confiscated cash, jewellery, five cars and three high-powered motorcycles worth more than RM276,000.
Zulkifli said all suspects who were detained at two locations had previous records for drug trafficking and they would be remanded to assist investigations.
“Urine screening on the six suspects found all of them positive for drugs and they will he remanded until June 7 to facilitate investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952,” he said.
He said in the first five months of this year, police had seized various types of drugs worth RM99.64 million throughout the country. — Bernama
