MIRI: Miri City Council ( MCC) became the first local authority in the state to take an anticorruption oath and sign a pledge to be free from corruption with the Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission ( MACC) here yesterday.

Its mayor Adam Yii, deputy mayor Julaihi Mohamad, and councillors joined some 400 department heads, senior officers and staff to read the oath, led by acting MCC secretary Morshidi Fredrick, during the pledge signing ceremony at Miri Civic Centre.

Yii and Julaihi signed the pledge on behalf of the councillors, while the administration side was signed by Morshidi and council horticulturist officer Chee Kie Chang.

State MACC director Dato Badrul Shah Norman and head of MACC Miri Othman Anyan witnessed the signing ceremony.

In his address, Badrul said the initiative by MCC showed it’s commitment to be free from corruption and abuse of power.

“Your total support indeed has lit MACC’s spirit to continue to discharge our responsibilities accordingly to combat corruption and abuse of power.”

Badrul said the approach taken by the council is relevant because the people are always observing and evaluating the administration of the local authority.

Thus, it was important for MCC to show transparency when providing services to the people as corruption and power abuse will

Yii, in his earlier address, said MCC will continue to enhance ethics in the workplace to prevent the bad culture of corruption from rearing its head in the council.

“The effort of the council in carrying out the pledge is an indication of MCC passing down the message to our staff, clients and customers that we are ready, committed and prepared to get rid of corruption in
