Pustaka Bookaroo returns to RWMF

-

KUCHING: Pustaka ( State Library) Bookaroo will be returning to this year’s Rainforest World Music Festival ( RWMF) to be held at Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) from July 14 to 16.

It will feature interactive sessions for children aged seven to 12 during the three- day festival, said a statement issued by the Sarawak Tourism Board ( STB) yesterday.

The sessions will include storytelling and reading as well as arts and crafts sessions thematically centred on cultural and traditional music.

Pustaka Bookaroo at RWMF was created to increase awareness and appreciation for traditional indigenous music and instruments among the younger generation, using mind-broadening activities that allow children to use their creativity to craft instruments from household materials.

The Doodle Wall will be set up at the festival for children and other festival goers to make their mark on the large mural of a ‘ Tree of Life’, to show their love of music.

The State Library has always taken big steps to encourage literacy and love for books and learning among the younger generation in Sarawak and holding ‘ Bookaroo’ programmes turns those steps into bigger strides.

The Bookaroo project which began in India in 2008 is now held in various cities including Kuching with the goal of bringing children, books and writers together in book-related activities to foster the joy of reading in children.

In addition to the 20th anniversary of RWMF, Pustaka Bookaroo returns to Kuching after its international project, ‘ Bookaroo Trust – Festival of Children’s Literature’ won the Literary Festival Award at the London Book Fair’s ( LBF) International Excellence Awards this year.

This year’s RWMF will feature some 29 bands over three days of stage shows.

Among the activities lined up for this year’s 20th anniversary celebration are health and wellness programmes in addition to the festival’s usual mini sessions, arts and crafts for children as well as a traditional food and crafts bazaar.
