100 senior citizens undergo free health screening

-

MIRI: Nearly 100 senior citizens had their health screened for free.

Organised by Tzu Chi Taiwan Buddhist Foundation Miri Branch (Tzu Chi Miri), the event was held at Jalan Persiaran Kabor, Senior Citizen’s Street yesterday.

According to its publicity officer Dennis Yee, it was held to reach out to the public, especially senior citizens.

“The health-screening is conducted once every two months with focus on blood glucose, cholesterol, and BMI. These are the basic screening for the elderly to understand their body and those who have passed the threshold will be advised to follow up with doctors in general hospitals,” Yee said.

Yee thanked Gnosis Laboratory for sponsoring the equipment for screening and Tzu Chi volunteers and doctors from Miri Hospital for their support by helping out at the event.

“We are happy that the doctors have been attentive and patiently explain to the elderly the state of their health,” he said.

The health-screening drew participants from various races and religious backgrounds - Tzu Chi being a colour-blind organisation that reaches out to people from all walks of life.

It utilises a combination of western medicine and Chinese traditional medicine to more effectively diagnose the condition and provide dietary advice.

“We have organised similar events many times before but there are still a lot of people especially the elderly who have been neglected, or oblivious to the state of their own health.

“Hence, our main purpose in this event is to reach out to them, check their health and advise them on follow-up in government hospitals if necessary,” Yee said.
