PADANG TERAP: The Education Ministry (MOE) is targeting to upgrade internet broadband connectivity at 6,700 schools nationwide to at least 10 Megabytes per second (Mbps) by next year.

It’s minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the target was to enable more teachers and students, especially those in rural areas, to enhance their knowledge and enjoy the convenience of Internet in line with the rapid growth of the information communications technology (ICT).

“This had been emphasised by Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak) who wanted to see education enhanced by promoting the use of ICT and digital skills among students.

Therefore, for 2017 and 2018, 1BistariNet has been given a KPI (Key Performance Indicator) to ensure broadband connectivity in schools especially in the rural areas is upgraded,” he told reporters after officiating the Padang Terap Tadarus Al-Quran reciting ceremony here yesterday.

Mahdzir said currently some schools in Sabah, Sarawak and the Peninsula were still on very small aperture terminal (VSAT) network and the data speed was between 2Mbps to 4Mbps.

Meanwhile, the Tadarus Al-Quran reciting ceremony organised by Padang Terap Wanita Umno Division succeeded in gathering about 1,500 imams and Islamic religious teachers to recite the Al-Quran throughout Ramadan. — Bernama
