Rotarians take goal of reaching out to less fortunate seriously

-

MIRI: Formed only in January 2 this year, Rotary Club (RC) of Miri Oil Town has proven that it means business in achieving its goals of reaching out to the community, particularly the less fortunate.

On Saturday night, the club handed donations of RM3,000 each to the Sarawak Children Cancer Society ( SCCS) and Association of Parents with Special Children ( Pibakis) Miri.

Club Chartered President Kenny Kong Suy Choy handed over the donations to representatives of the two associations during the club’s thanksgiving dinner, attended by some 70 people including 27 members and their family members, sponsors, supporters and Interacts from SMK St. Columba and SMK Lutong.

“The donations were raised from the charity sale during our chartered night on May 19. We thank the public for supporting our club, without them it would be difficult to achieve our goals.

“Our core mission in serving the community is to complement government’s efforts of making available clean water, medical and education,” said Kong to the Borneo Post when met during the dinner.

He said the donations were the first charitable project they had and before the end of this year, they hoped to implement two clean water projects for 250 families at Long Pillah in upper Baram and 30 families from Rumah Gindang in Bekenu.

“We are still awaiting funds from our collaborators – including churches and local sponsors. Once the funds are available we will implement the projects so that those at Long Pillah will have piped water supply and the villagers at Rumah Gindang will have clean water supply,” he said.

In the meantime, Kong said in line with their vision of setting up a strong club with positive culture to serve the increasing population, they are planning their ‘one year look ahead and five year plan’.

Meanwhile during the thanksgiving dinner, there were also presentations of awards to members and mementos to sponsors.

Among those present were Councillor Karambir Singh, SCCS President Joceyln Hee and organising chairman Wislon Chiam Tak Chee who is also the club’s president elect for 2018.
