Muslims looking forward to Hari Raya but watching budgets

-

KUCHING: Hari Raya Aidilfitri is a much awaited celebration, especially by Muslims in the state and like in previous years, the upcoming Hari Raya celebration means families will fork out extra to mark the festive occasion.

Even while Muslims are still observing the holy Ramadan month, shopping in preparation for Hari Raya has already started, with Hari Raya Bazaars and shopping malls making a host of offers, all which add to the buildup of excitement.

The Borneo Post recently interviewed various individuals on their take towards spending for Hari Raya, and whether with the uncertain economic situation, they are still willing to splash extra cash on their families and homes.

Businessman Mohd Sahrul Masni, 34, said with the current economic slowdown, it is not wise to spend too much for Hari Raya.

“For me, it’s not just about the economy, but much more of a symbol of respect especially to the less fortunate who also celebrate the day. I am more into the spirit of giving,” Mohd Sahrul said.

He explained that he had seen many examples of individuals who earned five to six figures income annually who lost their jobs, had to withdraw from their investments and barely had money left to survive.

“I’ll take it as a lesson and I personally have never seen anything like the current economic situation nowadays,” he said, adding that much of the money he spent was for his two daughters and wife.

For Sarah Abdul Manap, 31, celebrating Hari Raya is much different now as an adult compared to her childhood and teenage years.

“I used to suffer from Raya anxiety. I would stress out about buying new things, what to wear and I always compared myself to others who have more.

“After getting married and having more commitments, I have learned to care less about superficial things and cut down on unnecessary spending,” she said.

She pointed out that Hari Raya now for her is more about spending quality time with family and loved ones.

Meanwhile, Dayang Emilia Ariza, 30, said her family is cutting on their festive spending this year.

“Yes, we cut on our spending this year due to rising prices. Now we spend more prudently and compare prices first before buying,” she said.

Dayang Emilia added that her family managed their spending based on their past experiences particularly in the purchase of items for Hari Raya.

“Last year we spent more and by the end, some were wasted,” she said.
