SUPP Kuching branch holds work party to prepare for anniversary do
KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) Kuching branch yesterday launched a gotong-royong campaign to keep its vicinity clean and hygienic.
The event was held in conjunction with the branch’s preparation for its 58th anniversary celebration to take place from June 29 to July 1. SUPP Kuching branch was set up on June 29, 1959.
The branch will host the twoday event at its office at Jalan Padungan here on June 29 and 30 while an anniversary dinner is to take place at the Pullman Hotel here on July 1.
There will be food fair, karaoke contest and other activities outside its office during the two nights from June 29.
Yesterday, branch members gathered outside the office by 9am to clear waste around its premises.
Among those present were Sarawak administrative officer of the District Office Kuching Jong Hse Jun, Pemanca Ko Wai Neng and Kuching City South ( MBKS) councillor Bong Lian Huan.
In a simple address, Ko said he was delighted to note that the branch had fulfilled its social responsibility to keep the environment hygienic and clean.
He hoped that other organisations and individuals would also follow suit to help maintain a healthy living environment for all.
“To prevent any dengue outbreak, we must make sure to clear stagnant water, which serves as breeding ground for aedes mosquitoes,” added Ko.
Meanwhile Jong also commended members of SUPP Kuching branch for taking the initiative to organise the cleaning campaign.
“I was made to understand that this is an annual activity of SUPP Kuching branch. It is a laudable effort while individuals who are involved can also foster closer rapport with one another.”
He believed that the campaign had also provided a platform for participants to interact among themselves.
“Some of us have so indulged in our mobile devices that we don’t interact much these days. This gotong-royong event should help address that,” he said.
He noted that there had been some dengue cases here which should compel city dwellers to pay more attention to cleanliness.
He also hoped that the campaign could help raise awareness among the local community on the need to maintain cleanliness so as to keep dengue outbreak at bay.
