KAPIT: The Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCCIS) donated RM 150,000 to fourteen Chinese independent schools in the state on Saturday.

The cheque presentation ceremony was held at Meligai Hotel here in conjunction with the ACCCIS annual general meeting.

Present to witness the ceremony was Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The recipients comprised four Chinese independent schools in Kuching, one in Serian, one in Sarikei, five in Sibu, one in Bintulu and two in Miri which were given allocations based on the school population.

President of ACCCIS Hu Yu Siong in a brief remark said the chamber has played significant roles to serve as a vital link between the business community and the government. It has also created close rapport with China to tap the vast business opportunity in the Chinese mainland.

“We support government policy to tap the business opportunity locally and abroad especially now in Asia the Chinese has advocated ‘One Belt One Road’. I believe the local businessmen have advantage because we share many similarities with Chinese counterpart for example we speak Mandarin. We give full support to the Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg on his Digital Economy because this will increase our trade locally and abroad.

“In order to accelerate economic activity, infrastructure development is vital. Kapit is currently only accessible by river and the cost of transportation is higher than in Sibu. Here, goods are 40 per cent more expensive because of transportation charges. We are looking forward to the road between Kapit- SongKanowit and hopefully when completed could lower the cost of living,” added Hu.
