BINTULU: The Bintulu Islamic Welfare Trust Board ( Lakib) continued its annual ‘ Duit Raya’ programme this year by giving away cash aid to 1,239 underprivileged Muslims here, including orphans.

Minister in The Chief Minister’s Office (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip, who is also Jepak assemblyman and Lakib chairman, performed the presentation yesterday morning at Masjid Darul Makmur Jepak, where the recipients comprised 400 Jepak constituents and 180 children from Bintulu Peryatim Complex.

The remaining 659 received their aid at Bangunan Martabat here in the afternoon.

According to Bintulu Peryatim chairman Haidar Khan Asghar Khan, the assistance is derived from donations by Lakib and several individuals.

“Each recipient is given RM100 for Hari Raya,” he said.

Meanwhile, Talib said the annual programme was meant to bring Aidilfitri cheer to the underprivileged, especially the orphans.

“We gather here every year, we respect and love one another – this is the true culture of Islam. The concept of giving has been practised since the era of Prophet Muhammad. The leaders must serve the people – this is another Islamic teaching.

“I hope that all Muslims would continue upholding this concept (of giving) in helping the needy in our society,” said Talib, who was accompanied by his wife Datin Dr Zaleha Abdullah at the event.

Bintulu Deputy Resident Hamdiah Bakir, Bintulu District Officer Mataip Sayu and local community leader Penghulu Drahman Kawi were also present.
