MIRI: A total of 101 poor families and 20 students from SJK Chung San here received Hari Raya goodies and cash donations from the Miri Che Lee Khor Moral Uplifting Society yesterday.

The presentation ceremony was graced by Miri mayor Adam Yii, representing Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang.

Also present was Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri Che Lee Khor Moral Uplifting Society president Tony Phui and the event organising chairlady Betty Pong.

Speaking at the function, Yii praised the organiser for the charitable effort, adding that they have shown the true spirit of a multiracial society.

“I must praise the association ( Miri Che Lee Khor Moral Uplifting Society) for their generous effort.

“They have been giving generously to less fortunate members of the society, irrespective of race and religion.

“This is indeed a commendable act that should be an example for others to follow,” he said.

He added that the association has been known for their charitable act which is carried out during major festivals such as the Chinese New Year, Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya.

“I was also told that they also give similar donations during the Chinese Ghost Festival.

“This is a good example which other associations and companies can also carry out as one of their Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR),” he said.

At the function, Yii announced a RM10,000 grant from Ahmad Lai for Miri Che Lee Khor Moral Uplifting Society.

Lee, who also spoke at the function, commended the event organiser for making an effort to contribute towards the welfare of the less fortunate members of society.

“The fact that such charitable gesture is made irrespective of the recipients’ race and religion makes the act very meaningful, and I hope more will follow their footsteps,” he said.

Lee also announced a RM25,000 grant for Miri Che Lee Khor Moral Uplifting Society.
