KAPIT: Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) Kapit Chapter, in collaboration with Kapit District Council ( KDC), is embarking on a ‘ Go Green Environment Campaign’ to plant 100 trees along Jalan Penghulu Nyanggau, stretching from the roundabout at Jalan Selirik to the roundabout at the new Kapit Bazaar.

The campaign is scheduled to kick off near the roundabout at Jalan Selirik this Thursday at 3pm, where Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat is expected

We (MRC and Lions Club) hope that through our effort, there would be more awareness of the importance of protecting our environment for the future generations. Dr Sia Tih Kong, Malaysian Red Crescent Kapit Chapter chairman

to officiate at the launch.

On Monday, MRC Kapit chairman Dr Sia Tih Kong led his committee members to meet KDC secretary Jabang Juntan and assistant secretary Kelimbik Sibat to ensure the smooth process of the programme.

When contacted, Dr Sia said the 100 seedlings of various types of decorative plants including flowers and palms to be planted were contributed by the MRC and the Lions Club of Kapit to create a green environment and also to heighten awareness of the effects of global warming that would have many negative effects on human beings and crops.

“We ( MRC and Lions Club) hope that through our effort, there would be more awareness of the importance of protecting our environment for the future generations. One of the factors that adversely affect our ecology is the uncontrolled felling of trees and clearing of forests, which contributed to rising global temperatures. The tree-planting will not only beautify the town’s landscape, but will also provide shade for the pedestrians,” said Dr Sia.

Joining the courtesy call were MRC secretary David Chuo, MRC officer-in- charge of the treeplanting programme Stanley Ling Bee Chong, publicity officer James Ling, assistant secretary Serani Eli, KDC technical assistant Afizi- Qazi Sout, and public and environmental health officer Favian Masing.
