MIRI: Heavy vehicles such as lorries and trailers are urged to stay away from the main roads to enable members of the motoring public to drive home to their respective hometown with ease for Hari Raya.

Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus said drivers of such vehicles should give way to other motorists for the sake of road safely.

“I would like to appeal to the Road Transport Department ( RTD) to reduce the number of heavy vehicles on Sarawak’s main roads to smooth the traffic flow during this festive season,” she said when met during the break- of- fast recently.

According to her, the number of vehicles driven closely to one another also made it difficult for drivers to overtake, thus causing unnecessary traffic

“We hope the number of heavy vehicles can be reduced this festive season as there are a number of accidents caused by overtaking heavy vehicles that are driven closely to each other.”

She added it would be good if the operation of all heavy vehicles could be temporary stopped during this festive period to ensure smoother and safer traffic flow for those driving back to their hometown.

The Bekenu assemblywoman also advised lorry drivers not to park their vehicles by the roadsides as this could pose danger to other road users.

“The coastal road for example has very little space by the road sides and if big vehicles were parked there it will be quite dangerous for other road users,” she said.

Meanwhile, the breakoffast held last Sunday was organised by Rosey’s Bekenu Service Centre and was attended by officers and staff of government agencies in the area and members of the local media.

Rosey said the event was part of measures to foster greater unity among Muslims and non-Muslims in the area.
