Pulau Salak folk finally enjoy treated water supply

KUCHING: The people of Kampung Pulau Salak are now finally enjoying treated water supply after more than 50 years of waiting.

Yesterday, a pre-launching ceremony of the project, which is undertaken by Department of Rural water Supply (JBALB), was held at the village. Minister of Natural Resources and Environmen­t Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar officiated at the launching ceremony.

The cost of the project is RM5.9 million. The physical developmen­t of the project has been completed and is awaiting electricit­y connection so that water can be pumped to every house.

waiting patiently for more than 50 years. I am very proud of them,” Wan Junaidi told a press conference.

He assured the villagers that they would enjoy the water supply withing two months. For the moment, they can only get their water from the fire hydrants.

The minister added that the government had tried various means to provide the villagers with clean water supply, but all those were futile for various reasons.

Among the various means was to harvest rainwater which ended in failure. Undergroun­d water was also studied but that too failed because there wasn’t any.

Wan Junaidi said he and Assistant Minister of Rural Electricit­y who is also Pantai Damai assemblyma­n Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi had been working tirelessly to bring treated water supply to the villagers through JBALB.
