-

SIBU: Fans of blowpipe sport in Sibu now have a better platform for their activities after the Registrar of Societies approved the registration of Sibu Blowpipe Club ( KMS) on June 20.

KMS chairman Mingat Bakil said the club’s patron is Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang while a councillor of Sibu Municipal Council, Paulus Dandee Banyang, is its advisor.

He said the main objective of KMS is to bring blowpipe sport to a higher level apart from organising blowpipe competitions.

“KMS also wants to share with enthusiasts about blowpipe and dartmaking arts as well as (about) ‘temilah’ (a bamboo cylinder with a lid used to keep blowpipe darts).

“We are targeting to expand our activities to schools to preserve this art,” he said.

According to Mingat, it is uncommon to see families in longhouses owning a blowpipe nowadays.

“Even if they have one, it is usually inherited from their ancestors,” he added.

He said so far, KMS has 25 registered members representing a good racial mix who have a deep interest in blowpipe sport.

KMS is actively recruiting members now. Those interested can contact Mingat on 019- 8867978 or his deputy Nicholas Engong Jugah (016-9211341) or secretary Ellyne Tong Siew Hua ( 011- 51705134).

Meanwhile, KMS is organising a blowpipe competition on July 24 at 7.30am at Sibu Town Square Phase 1.

The competition is divided into 40/50 feet Women’s Amateur Single, 50/60 feet Women’s Professional Single, Women’s Double Open, 60/70 Men’s Amateur Single, 70/90 Men’s Professional Single and Men’s Double Open categories.

Prizes will be in the form of cash and trophies.
