Council to conduct rating system on toilets in mosques across Sarawak

-

KOTA SAMARAHAN: Mosques across the state will have their toilets graded under a new starrating system soon.

According to Sarawak Islamic Council ( MIS) president Datu Misnu Taha, the move was proposed following public complaints about unsatisfactory conditions of toilets in mosques everywhere.

It is expected that the system would commence this August.

“With this new rating system, we hope to address and solve this problem for the good of those using the facilities at the mosques,” he told reporters during a Hari Raya open house yesterday, which he hosted at his residence in Taman Desa Ilmu here.

Adding on, Misnu said MIS would appoint a monitoring committee, of which the members would go to mosques across the state to assess the toilets there, before deciding on grading – the highest (most hygienic/ best maintained/ best equipped) of which would be five stars.

Should the assessors find any toilet to be dirty, they would alert that respective mosque committee, said Misnu.

Moreover, he said the assessor would not only be looking at toilets.

“They will also review the mosque’s interiors and overall landscaping, which will also be graded like the toilets.”

Meanwhile, Misnu said the new mosque at Kuching Waterfront should reach completion by March next year.

At present, progress of works is at 70 per cent.

Misnu believed that upon completion, the new ‘ floating mosque’ would be another landmark and also a tourism attraction in the city.

“Sabah has a floating mosque, Terengganu also has one – then Sarawak can also have one. It will be a beautiful landmark, comparable with Saudi Arabia’s Al Rahma Floating Mosque near the Red Sea,” he said.

The new mosque is designed to accommodate around 2,500 people at any one time. The cost of construction is estimated to be around RM15 million.

At the open house, Misnu and his wife Datin Jamilah Said also hosted some 40 children from the Sarawak Orphans Welfare Organisation (Peryatim).
