Fire reduces workers’ quarters to ashes, no casualties reported

-

BINTULU: Three wooden blocks of workers’ quarters in Jalan Sungai Nyigu here were razed to the ground during a fire yesterday morning.

Fire and Rescue Department ( Bomba) zone chief Unjar Lum, when met at the site, said no injuries or casualties were reported in the incident.

According to him, Bomba received a distress call at 10.47am and dispatched 18 firemen to the scene in three fire engines.

He added that personnel from the Samalaju and Tatau fire stations as well as other relevant agencies were also present at the scene.

“We managed to bring the fire under control at 12.30pm and we are still waiting for confirmation on the number of families affected,” he said.

Unjar said his men encountered low water pressure while putting out the fire due to peak hours.

“When using fire hydrants, it is limited and depends on the water pressure in that particular location.

“The pressure was actually good but not enough for us to put out big fires as we need more water pressure,” he added.

Three blocks of the quarters, comprising 35 units, were razed to the ground, although firemen were able to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby workshop.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Also present at the site were Bintulu police chief Superintendent Zailanni Amit and Bintulu Bomba station chief Dihata Gobel.
