Robbery shows CIQ urgently needed at border points
SIBU: The recent robbery in Serikin spells the urgency for the establishment of Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex (CIQ) in the area to tighten border security, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Masir Kujat said.
It was reported that four armed suspects, known as Geng Rantau, broke into a house in Taman Senggi last week and threatened the occupants.
Masir reiterated a pressing need for a CIQ in Serikin, saying he has been suggesting it all this while.
“I have received application from the local MP there to speed it up, but as I said earlier, we are facing financial constraint.
“We can’t do much unless we look at the coming budget in October,” he said.
The Sri Aman MP noted that crime occurred at almost every checkpoints or border points. “Even in my area there are many `Jalan tikus’, so there may be crime (as) people try to smuggle (goods) that are not reported,” he said.
He said the ministry had in mind to engage the services of People’s Volunteer Corps ( Rela) but this needed to wait for the Malaysia Border Security Agency (AKSEM) Act passed at the parliament sitting this month.
“When the Act is passed, Rela will be deployed to man border security in the peninsula first, and later extended to cover Sabah and Sarawak,” he added.
