MIRI: Young cochlear implant candidate Noor Batrisyia Ramlan continues to receive financial contributions to cover the cost of the procedure.

According to Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, the public fund for the toddler has now amounted to RM49,000, comprising donations from family members, relatives and also some Good Samaritans.

Ting, who is also president of Sarawak Cochlear Implant Society (SCIS), thanked the donors for their contributions which exhibited their care and concern for the girl’s wellbeing.

“Despite the overwhelming response, we are still short of RM71,000 in that the total cost of the cochlear implant is about RM120,000. We are keeping our fingers crossed, hoping that with the amount that we have on hand and if all goes well, it would be possible for the operation to be done before the

end of this year,” he said prior to the handover of donations at Dynasty Hotel here yesterday.

Ting reiterated his appeal, on behalf of SCIS, to members of the public to help two-year- old Noor Batrisyia.

“We hope that Noor Batrisyia could go through the cochlear implant before she turns four – the sooner, the better,” he said, stressing that the age of four is the ‘golden period’ that determines whether the girl could hear and learn to speak in the future.

“I urge all to donate. Regardless of the amount, the family would gladly accept it and be thankful to the donors for their help in ensuring that the girl could lead a normal life later on.”

According to Ting, this is the third fundraising initiative by SCIS. Previously, it sponsored the surgeries for two children, Ivan Ling and Athena Kho Yuan, in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Meanwhile, Dynasty Hotel Miri managing director Tony Pui handed over RM10,000 to SCIS, derived from the funds already raised for its upcoming ‘14th Annual Dynasty Charity Run’.

“The charity run is supposed to take off this July 9 and the plan was for us to hand over the donations (to SCIS) that day.

“However after hearing the urgency of getting the funds ready for Noor Batrisyia’s cochlear implant, the organising committee – without any hesitation – decided to present the donation immediately,” said Pui, assuring all that adding the girl as another donation recipient would not affect the funds slated for five listed beneficiaries – namely Association of Parents of Children with Special Needs ( Pibakis), Morsjaya Community-based Rehabilitation Centre ( PDK), Miri Dialysis Centre, Sarawak Society for the Blind ( Miri Branch) and Home for the Aged.

The handover yesterday was witnessed by Miri Hospital director Dr Jack Wong, Dynasty Hotel acting general manager Ho Poh Chin, SCIS treasurer Dr Doris Jong and several local community leaders.

Those wishing to donate to SCIS can do so via funds transfer into Public Bank account number 3196459717.
