International Medical University to hold info day at Hilton Kuching July 8
KUCHING: The International Medical University ( IMU) will be holding its Info Day at Hilton Kuching here on July 8 and at Promenade Hotel, Kota Kinabalu the following day (July 9) from 10am to 4pm.
IMU, in a statement issued from Kuala Lumpur, said the event provides prospective students with the opportunity to learn more about the university’s Nutrition programme, Foundation in Science and other programmes.
“This is also an opportunity to find out more about IMU’s full and partial scholarships for students with excellent academic results and the university’s 25th Anniversary Special Bursary.
“Students who have just completed their SPM and do not have pre-university qualification, can consider enrolling in the oneyear IMU Foundation in Science, the preferred foundation and direct route for entry into any of the university’s degree programmes, including credit transfer options,” it said.
In addition to this, students who apply to any of the university’s programmes during the Info Day will receive a waiver of up to RM800 (except medicine and dentistry) for the July 2017 or September 2017 intake.
Meanwhile, IMU also noted that an alumna from its first cohort of the Bachelor of Science ( Hons) Nutrition, Ng Yeng Yi, made the university proud by winning the coveted Nutrition Society of Malaysia ( NSM) Undergraduate Prize at the 1st South East Asia Public Health Nutrition ( SEAPHN) Conference recently.
“Ng’s win was based on her research in the area of carbohydrate nutrition and risk of diabetes,” said the statement.
For this research, Ng and other members of her team worked on the effectiveness of a salivary enzyme in determining the type and amount of carbohydrates consumed. They also explored if saliva could be an alternative biomarker for screening of diabetes.
The other members of her team are IMU faculty members namely Dr Sangeetha Shyam, Dr Snigdha Misra and Dr Valsala R.
At the same conference, the NSM Publication Prize for Dairy Nutrition was awarded to an article from a research spearheaded by IMU.
The IMU team collaborated with UPM researchers to study the dietary intake and blood levels of gangliosides among Malaysian toddlers. Gangliosides is a nutrient found to be important for the development of the brain, immunity and gut in infants.
The team members working on this research are Emeritus Prof Khor Geok Lin, Dr Sangeetha Shyam, Dr Snigdha Misra and Dr Megan Chong.
At IMU, the nutrition curriculum has been developed to meet high international standards and global needs.
This degree exposes students to practical industrial placements and research, giving them valuable experience and preparing them to be competent nutritionists, upon graduation.
It also gives graduates an added advantage as they will be well prepared to meet the increasing demand for nutritionists in government agencies, industries, universities, research institutions, mass media and businesses involved with food, nutrition, wellness, fitness and health.
