SIBU: The inaugural walkathon of Sacred Heart School ( SHS) in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of its relocation from Mission Road to its present site at Oya Road here will be held on Aug 5.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, school board of management secretary Dr Hii Sui Cheng said the event intends to retrace the route from Mission Road to Oya Road.

The event is jointly organised by the school board of management, parent-teacher association ( PTA) and Sacred Heart Old Students Association (Shosa).

Hii estimated about 250 students were involved in the relocation between 1967 and 1973.

“I invite all students, who were involved in the relocation by way of transporting, carrying chairs and tables and so on for a memorable walk down memory lane.

“It will start about 6.30am and end up in the school and later join the whole programme in school,” Hii said, adding that most of them would be in the age bracket of 60 years and above.

The distance from Mission Road to the present site is estimated to be 1.8 km.

“Myself and head prefects from the respective years will do the flag- off.

“Let’s relive this special occasion to walk from Mission Road to Oya Road,” Hii enthused.

Other than the walk, he said some other activities were being planned in the school for this celebration.

Meanwhile, Hii chipped in RM3,000 for the 50th anniversary celebration of the relocation of the school.

The 115-year- old SHS was established in 1902. It was initially located at what is now Sibu Town Square Phase 2 before it was relocated to Mission Road and later moved to Oya Road.
