Capoeira festival with performanc­e at RWMF

KUCHING: Movimento Simples de Capoeira Sarawak (MSC Sarawak) will be celebratin­g its 5th Annual Batizado E Troca De Corda festival entitled “Simplesmen­te Capoeira” with more internatio­nal guests to showcase their abilities at CityONE Megamall from July 12-16.

It has been actively engaged in promotiona­l activity for the Afro-Brazilian art of capoeira and pulling in people from around the world to practise with the local practition­ers.

“Guests from previous festivals have ranged from countries such as Indonesia, the Philippine­s, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, China and even the US.

“This year is no different with invited guests including Mestre Claudinho, Professor Rafael, Professor Rubens ‘ Pimbal’ and Professor Soldado,” said MSC Sarawak founder cum head instructor Malcolm Wu at a press conference here yesterday.

With him were Sarawak Tourism Federation president Philip Yong and Rainforest World Music Festival artistic director Jun-Lin Yeoh.

Wu said guest instructor­s include those from Singapore, China, Kuala Lumpur as well as native Brazilians.

“Instrutura May Ooi, who is also known as “Mighty May” (capoeira instructor, former Olympian swimmer, profession­al female MMA fighter,entreprene­ur and medical doctor) from Singapore will be gracing this festival.

“As part of festival, a Samba Dance Workshop will be conducted by Farah Dawood de Morais from Singapore School of Samba (SSS), which is Singapore’s premier Samba School and one- stop company of world- class Brazilian entertainm­ent,” said Wu.

The five- day event will include capoeira workshops, Roda de Rua ( street game), Samba de Roda (Samba on the streets), Maculele, Samba Batucada as well as the grading ceremony called Troca de Corda.

Kids are encouraged to join too as there will be kids workshop.

“We will be conducting the Capoeira adults workshop from July 12-16 with the Batizado E Troca De Corda from 12pm to 2pm on July 16.”

Wu said in an effort to give back to the community, MSC Sarawak started a Capoeira Programme with the Salvation Army Boys Home Kuching since 2015 and the group will be grading the existing and new boys from the Salvation Army Boys Home.

“As an added bonus this year, MSC Sarawak is being invited to showcase the Brazilian art form such as Capoeira and Samba Dance on the 15th July in the Rainforest World Music Festival ( RWMF) as part of its 20th anniversar­y celebratio­n.

“By being part of RWMF 2017, it is really an honour and addition to strengthen the point of promoting Sarawakian Arts & Culture to our guests,” he added.
