- By Peter Boon reporters@theborneopost.com

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) will consider the proposed new night market put forward by United People’s Party (UPP) Community Service Board (Sibu).

This was disclosed by SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, when asked on Minister of International Trade and ECommerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh’s request to reconsider the proposal rather than rejecting it outright by giving it a bit of thought.

Wong made the call when officiating at ‘Pasar Malam Life in Sibu’ in Market Road here recently.

“I have discussed with councillors and I think I would like to study this one first. Of course, it is quite a good project, we will study and since Dato Sri (Wong) has asked SMC to study – of course, we will study (the proposal).

“We will consider it and when we have reached a collective decision, we will call Dato Andrew Wong the chairman of UPP Community Service Board to sit down and discuss the issue. We will seriously consider the proposal,” Tiong told reporters

when met here yesterday.

Recently, Wong who is also Second Finance Minister, said the proposed new night market would bring a new chapter to the market which was set up in 1973.

He said it would transform Sibu’s image to attract people from near and far, including foreign tourists.

On another issue, Tiong, who is Dudong assemblyman, disclosed that a letter had been sent to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development to request for Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) be extended to six longhouses in the Dudong area, which now relied on gensets.

They are Rumah Jackson Sibat, Rumah Anthony Janggu, Rumah Mai Sigai, Rumah Dumin Bakak, Rumah Sain Mani and Rumah Kompani.

“We sent the letter last week and we will follow up on the matter,” he said.

To another question, Tiong said there is a longhouse in Dudong area still relying on water tank to collect rain water for their daily needs.

He said the longhouse is located very far away and can only be accessed through plantation road, which is very hilly in nature.

He believed these were among reasons the longhouse has yet to enjoy piped water supply apart from the cost factor.
