KUCHING: JT Statistical Consulting will be running a four-part research workshop series designed to help anyone interested in writing a research paper.
Participants will be able to know how to start a dissertation or thesis, assess it, improve it and draft the first three chapters of their dissertations and thesis by the end of the programme.
“Based on last year’s workshop participants, we have learned that the biggest problem is that they don’t know how to start, which is the most important part. By attending the workshop, we will be able to help them,” said workshop facilitator Professor Dr Andrew Tiong.
“Masters and PhD students, and even undergraduates who are thinking to continue to Masters or PhD can join us.”
He said that this workshop is suitable for any field of study.
Each workshop session is limited to 20 people as the venue can only fit 24 people maximum.
The first session on July 22 is on ‘Introduction to Research’ covering five topics: Choosing the Right Research Topic; Overview of the Research Process; Structure of a Dissertation; Dissertation Chapter One and Academic Writing. Upon completion, participants will be able to explain what is research; identify and formulate their research questions and hypothesis; and create a draft for chapter one of their dissertations and theses.
The second session on Aug 12 is on ‘Literature Review’ which covers six topics: Effective Literature Review; Overview of the Literature Review Process; Theoretical Framework; Dissertation Chapter Two; References and Citations and Literature Review Software.
Participants should be able to explain what is a literature review; understand why literature review is important; do an effective literature review; develop theoretical frameworks for their research; and draft chapter two of their dissertations and thesis.
Third session on Aug 26 is on ‘Qualitative Research Methods’ which covers four topics: Qualitative Research Design; Data Collection Methods; Data Analytical Methods and Writing and Presenting Qualitative Research.
Fourth session on Sept 16-17 is on ‘Quantitative Research Methods’ which covers five topics: Confounding Factors and Research Designs; Measurements and Research Instruments; Data Collection and Sampling Methods; Statistical Tests and Models; and Results Interpretation and Presentation.
Professor Tiong has over 50 years of teaching experience. He has been supervising PhD students for more than a decade. He has also authored 24 textbooks and study guides in multiple fields, including research methodology, mathematics, statistics, accounting, management, healthcare management and English grammar.
