SIBU: The inaugural Swan City Snooker Cup kicked off at Centre Point Snooker Centre here last Friday night.

A total of 55 players, including 15 new faces, are taking part in the tournament, played in fivelegs over a year-long duration.

This is another chance for the local snooker enthusiasts to come together and pit their skills and, hopefully, to unearth more potential players in this sport. — Mark Yeo, tournament initiator

Tournament initiator Mark Yeo expressed satisfaction over the big turnout.

“We are happy that the event had attracted at least 15 players who have never taken part in competition and this will go a long way to help promote the popularity of the game here,” he said.

The second leg will be held at Executive 3 Snooker Centre in Oct, followed by the third-leg at Lucky 7 in January 2018, fourthleg at First Class Snooker Centre in April 2018 and the final leg at Cueball Centre in July 2018.

“This is another chance for the local snooker enthusiasts to come together and pit their skills and, hopefully, to unearth more potential players in this sport,” Yeo added.

All the participating outlets offer the same prize money with the champion of each leg pocketing RM1,000, runner-up RM500, losing semi-finalists RM250 and losing quarterfinalists RM100. “An additional carrot of RM300 for the players achieving the highest break with a minimum 50 points per cue is also on offer,” Yeo said.

The competition will be played on a single knock-out basis.

Dato Sri Vincent Lee Chee Lung is the event’s main sponsor.
