Public told not to fall for fundraising scam using See Hua Daily Online logo

-

KUCHING: The public has been urged not to fall for a scam using the ‘See Hua Daily Online’ logo to purportedly raise funds for a three-year- old boy suffering from leukaemia.

SeeHua Daily yesterday clarified that it has not been raising funds for anyone recently, especially for a child cancer patient by the name of Lee Zhi Khai.

The Chinese daily also denied owning an Ambank account registered under ‘Seehua Daily Agency’ with the account number 888-XXX- 9110- 82.

An online news portal ‘ Now’ had published a report on July 8 with a Miri dateline, claiming that Lee Zhi Khai was suffering from acute myeloid leukaemia or AML.

The portal reported that the family had spent about RM300,000 on Lee and now needed another RM400,000 for the child to receive further treatment to fully recover.

The report went on to describe Lee’s illness and that the father, a salesman, had been going around to raise money so that his son might have a chance to receive treatment.

A bank account number, a combo of four pictures of the socalled child, and a See Hua Daily Online logo, was posted along with the report.

See Hua Daily only knew of the abuse of its logo yesterday after a Miss Lee called the office to ask for permission to collect donations on behalf of See Hua to give to the boy.

Upon knowing that its logo had been abused, See Hua Daily instantly left a message on ‘ Now’ news portal, which later appeared to have been shut down and could no longer be visited.

Meanwhile, See Hua Daily clarified on its news portal as well as Facebook page that the fundraising was a scam which it had no knowledge of until yesterday afternoon.

A police report was also lodged in Miri last night.

See Hua Daily called on the public not to fall prey to the scam and asked the public to verify with it especially on matters concerning charitable donations.
