Schools’ response to WOD essay competitio­n yet to pick up

MIRI: Schools here have yet to respond to the World Oceans Day ( WOD) 2017 Essay Writing Competitio­n scheduled for this Saturday (July 15) as part of activities to celebrate WOD 2017 here.

The competitio­n which is open to Form 1 to 5 students is divided into two categories. Category A is for students in Form 1 to 3 while Category B is for Form 4 and 5 students.

The theme for the competitio­n will focus on marine plastic pollution which is based on WOD 2017’s theme ‘Our Ocean, Our Future’.

“So far the response has been very slow and we are expecting to know the actual number by Friday. We hope that the 19 schools in Miri and six other rural schools in Bekenu and Niah will give us feedback the soonest,” said a spokespers­on for the organiser.

She explained that those who are not nominated by their schools may also participat­e, adding that walk-in registrati­on is accepted as long as they come and register before 1pm as the event will start by 1pm at the AV Room in Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri.

The winner of the competitio­n will receive a trophy and cash prize of RM150, while the first runner-up will receive a trophy and a cash prize of RM100. The second runner-up will receive a trophy and RM50 cash. All participan­ts will receive certificat­es of participat­ion.

The essay writing competitio­n is organised by Miri WOD 2017 Working Committee comprising Pustaka Negeri Sarawak Miri, Miri City Council, Malaysian Red Crescent ( MRC) Miri Chapter, Malaysian Nature Society ( MNS) Miri, Society of English Writers Northern Zone ( Soswe) and Miri Toastmaste­rs Club.

The winners of the competitio­n will be informed after the judging is done and the prize-giving ceremony will be held on July 29 at a seaside restaurant here.
